This Saturday, the UDC Van Ness farmers market returns for an extended season with many familiar vendors and some new faces.
The newcomers include Quinta Jackson Burns, a 2012 UDC law school grad who began her urban farming journey during the pandemic. UDC says Burns is the first participant of UDC’s Beginning Farmer Program to join the market as a vendor. She will be selling produce that, at first, she learned to grow in order to feed her own family. Burns went on to expand her skills and knowledge as a volunteer at UDC’s Community College at Lamond-Riggs, where she learned about hydroponic systems. She continued her farming education at the UDC Firebird Farm in Beltsville, Maryland.
The UDC Van Ness farmers market, now starting its 13th year, is a collaboration between UDC CAUSES and the National Latino Farmers and Ranchers Trade Association. It’s opening earlier than usual this year and continuing later – through December 6th. You’ll find the market at the UDC Student Center on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
