Umbrellas on the Avenue: A brief guide to outdoor dining in the neighborhood

April 29, 2025 by FHC 3 Comments

With the exception of some rain on the way, we think it’s safe to say: Patio dining weather is here.

The rainbow of umbrellas that have sprouted at local restaurants is practically beckoning us to dine out outdoors. And in our neighborhood, we have several places to choose from.

Bread Furst in April 2025

The last time we compiled this list was in 2014. Bread Furst had recently opened, and brought the number of eating establishments in our neighborhood with outdoor seating to an even dozen.

Now, there are 18 by our count. Starting at Nebraska Avenue and heading south to Van Ness Street:

Comet Ping Pong (5307 Connecticut)
Call Your Mother (5035 Connecticut)
Buck’s Fishing & Camping (5031 Connecticut)
Muchas Gracias (5029 Connecticut)

Can you look into whether this is indeed the last week for the shanty outside Rosemary Bistro? Under revised outdoor-dining regulations enacted late last year, he has until July 31 to take it down unless he has received an exemption (for which there is nothing on record). Dining sheds are no longer allowed in travel lanes, and the one at Rosemary’s is empty 90 percent of the time when the temperatures are hot.

DDOT extended the deadline for removing streateries from rush hour lanes to November 30. It’s on the Streatery webpage. And we’ve noticed outdoor tables across the neighborhood have been emptier of late given the heat and storms.
