Elly Newman knows a little something about organizing and protesting. She has several decades of experience, starting in the 1940s, when she was an organizer for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
When we met Newman in March 2025, the now 101-year-old Van Ness North co-op resident was getting ready to take part in the first Hands Off! demonstration against the Trump administration. She has continued to participate in rallies at Van Ness, and an organizer of the next local protest, on January 20th, tells us Newman will be at it again.
Barbara Green writes:
At age 101, Van Ness resident Elly Newman is still braving the cold and wind to wave a sign at her street corner, Connecticut Avenue and Veazey Terrace. On Sunday, January 11th, her sign said: “ICE OUT!” And on Tuesday, January 20th, along with people around the country, she will mark the one-year anniversary of the Trump inauguration with a new sign [echoing the overall theme]: “One Year Later: Remember and Resist.”
Her neighbors at the Van Ness complex and friends from other neighborhoods will join in a street-corner sign-waving with colorful posters and stern messages. All are welcome. Please join us: January 20th, 3 to 5 p.m., corner of Veazey Terrace and Connecticut Avenue.
