Did you know? Forest Hills Park (at 3200 Chesapeake Street) has two rain gardens. One is tucked alongside the basketball and tennis courts on Brandywine Street. The other is next to the amphitheater across the footpath from the tennis courts. They were installed to help capture and filter stormwater that otherwise might pollute Rock Creek and its Soapstone tributary.
The amphitheater rain garden was cleared out and replanted last fall. And on Saturday, November 21st, neighbors are invited to help maintain the gardens under the guidance of DPR and the DC Department of Energy and Environment.
Due to Covid-19 safety precautions, volunteers can sign up for one or more one-hour time slots between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., and only five people can register for each hour. Volunteers are also asked to wear masks and bring their own gloves and water. This is a kid-friendly volunteer opportunity, as long as the kid lets an adult tag along.
Rock Creek Conservancy is handling registration – you’ll find the signup links and more information here.
