WAMU Move: News Dept. Moves In Monday

September 13, 2013 by FHC

For the past few nights, through the brightly-lit windows of WAMU’s new headquarters at 4401 Connecticut, we’ve been able to see that the first floor looks move-in ready. But is it?

Pretty much.

From Andrew Huff, director of community relations at American University: “Monday morning (9/16), WAMU news will begin broadcasting from the new location. The following Monday (9/23), WAMU talk shows will broadcast from the new location.”

Huff also says WAMU will be hosting open houses for the neighborhood this winter. We’ll keep you posted on those. For now, we have to be content to be on the outside, looking in:

On-air studio with plenty of room for guests.

A few cables hang down from the ceiling in the office space next to the on-air studios.

the newsroom next to the on-air studios.

Though it does look much better from the outside as well.

The public space outside 4400 Connecticut. Much improved over the crumbling, red-painted steps there previously.

Some finishing touches outside.

And for reference, here's the architect's rendering from American University's presentation to ANC 3F in January.

Welcome Diane, Kojo and all at WAMU! We’re thrilled to have you in the ‘hood. Now…about that public space design and landscaping…we hope when you understand our vision for a greener Van Ness that you will cheerfully undertake some changes, such as pervious pavement, less concrete, more street trees and landscaping that looks more like your main campus.

Good point. The design may look better than before, but it sure does put a lot of concrete directly adjacent to the park, where runoff and erosion are huge problems.

What are AU’s plans for the (soon to be) former WAMU facility in Tenleytown?

Any opportunities for touring your new space?
