We can never have too much local news. So the two new online DC news publications are more of a very good thing.
The DC Line
thedcline.org) is a nonprofit news organization that launched shortly before the DC primary election in June. Its founder is Chris Kain, who was the managing editor of the Current Newspapers for many years. The DC Line aims to fill gaps in local coverage of politics, public policy and schools. It’s also covering local arts and culture. And it has picked up an excellent daily roundup of DC local news by another Current alum, Cuneyt Dil. Subscribe here and view the archive.
The DC Line does have a link for donations, but as of this writing is not yet accepting them.
DCist
DCist (dcist.com) relaunched on June 11th after a seven-month absence. If you haven’t heard the story behind its sudden disappearance – and its revival (thanks to WAMU), it’s a doozy. DCist is now based at WAMU’s Van Ness headquarters and this version is more focused on local happenings than the previous site.
Like the DC Line – and WAMU – DCist is a nonprofit and is seeking donations online (check the box next to “Tell us why you’re giving. We may broadcast it!” and write in “DCist”), by phone (call 800-248-8850) and by mail:

Note that The Current Newspapers is all but dead now. They declared bankruptcy a few months ago with huge debts and most staff quit. Somehow it is still technically existing but the fact that the managing editor is now heading the DC Line shows you where you should be shifting your attention.
