DC Parks and Recreation intends to renovate 32 playgrounds this year, including our own Forest Hills Playground. Its Play DC program has been working with the Friends of the Forest Hills Playground to create a park that is welcoming to all ages.
I was walking along the Baltimore Harbor recently and came across this wonderful small playground with upright xylophones, a living green tunnel and intriguing sculpture to climb and slide upon, which I could not resist. My friend Willia Hennigan took lots of photos so that I could bring them back to share.
Looking for interesting playground ideas really never left my blood since the Forest Hills Playground renovation project in 1990. I thought these might be ideas that the Friends of the Forest Hills Playground might like to consider. If you have other ideas with photos please share them.

These are fantastic ideas! I especially like the living tunnel! BTW, behind the Levine School in the playground next to their accoustic cottage, they have some nice musical playground equipment which is worth a look.

I love the xylophone. One wonders how much it costs, whether it poses maintenance challenges, and how neighbors react sounds they hear,

I love all these ideas. Europe is way ahead of the U.S. in how it utilizes parks and open space–public parks and school yards. Several books provide great inspiration to me while working on National Mall issues, DC parks, DC school gardens and farm to school initiatives. What’s possible for adults and young people for fun, active recreation and learning is tremendous–and extremely exciting. I’m happy to help.
