These are a few of my favorite things about Forest Hills in 2014

December 30, 2014 by FHC

by Tracy Johnke

It has been my pleasure to serve as Forest Hills Connection’s webmaster for the past two and a-half years. What I love most about this publication can be boiled down to this:

1) The wonderful and impressive people I’ve met through my work on the Connection, or now recognize thanks to profiles of our neighbors – and their pets.
2) It scratches my “need to know everything” itch.

So some of my favorite articles of 2014 have been profiles of this neighborhood’s artists (many written by Lee Armfield Cannon). And my favorite event of the year was the Forest Hills artists’ open house in May, where I got a chance to see the work of three of these artists up close.

Annette Polan, in her paint-splattered white coat, talking to guests during the Foresth Hills artists tour last May.

And nothing scratches my “need to know” itch like the articles on our neighborhood’s history. David Jonas Bardin started us off this year with his piece on UDC’s pre-Civil War roots. I also enjoyed the articles about:

  • One man’s Cold war plan.
  • The “space-age crystal palace” that was the Intelsat headquarters until this year.
  • An effort, 25 years ago, to rebuild Forest Hills Playground, and how it came to be built at 32nd and Chesapeake Streets almost 60 years ago.
  • Ann Kessler’s series on the schools for boys at Connecticut and Upton, parts one and two.
  • And Ann Kessler’s other series, on the physicists who started making their homes here a century ago, parts one, two and three.
