Treat Yourself To Lotus Blossoms

July 19, 2013

Jack Buresh, a neighbor on Brandywine Street, tells us about a special treat that awaits us at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.

You can take a quick trip to Asia by visiting the lotus ponds at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. The lotus flowers and water lilies are now in full bloom.

The huge expanses of lotus blossoms create a magnificent spectacle. And in addition to the beautiful flowers in the lotus and lily ponds, there is a wonderful boardwalk for wildlife viewing in the wetlands along the Anacostia River. Lots of herons, egrets, butterflies and dragonflies.

The Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens are free and open every day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are located across the Anacostia River from the National Arboretum, and are entered at 1550 Anacostia Avenue NE. All information about the gardens can be found at nps.gov/keaq.

The flowers are in bloom from May to September each year. To see them in their full glory, go in the morning before the flowers close for the day.
