Until her death earlier this month, Karen Perry served our community and her single member district for more than 15 years on Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3F.
The DC Board of Elections has now declared her seat vacant and will accept nominating petitions for SMD 3F02 from Monday, June 1st through Monday, June 22nd. Will you, like Perry did for so many years, heed the call to serve?
In DC, the ANCs are government at the neighborhood level, and our commissioners have worked hard on a number of local issues (it’s all right here), most recently pressing Metro to delay the escalator work at Van Ness and do a better job of engaging the community.
If you live within 3F02’s borders (check ANCfinder.org if you’re not sure) and are interested joining these dedicated commissioners, this article explains the role of an advisory neighborhood commissioner.
Once you have made the decision, you go in person to the Board of Elections (441 4th Street Northwest, room 250N) to pick up a nominating petition and then return it with the signatures of 25 other registered voters within 3F02 by close of business Monday, June 22nd. If two or more candidates do so, the ANC will announce at a subsequent meeting that it will hold a special election at its following meeting. If only one candidate completes this process, he or she will automatically fill the seat. If no one does it, the BOE will announce the vacancy again and the process will start over.
So think about it, talk to your neighbors about signing on, and contact the current commissioners with your questions.
