We want to bring your attention to some of the community meetings and gatherings in the remainder of the month:
Saturday, October 8
Heritage Day at Peirce Mill, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you’ve been before, you know it’s a treat for all ages. Milling demonstrations, activities for kids, and much more. A must-see for history buffs.
Thursday, October 13
Murch modernization community meeting, 7 p.m. Get the latest on the Murch modernization and construction plans. The meeting will be held at Murch’s temporary home at UDC (3373 Van Ness Street NW).
Saturday, October 15
Murch Elementary Fall Fair, 12 to 4 p.m. Murch’s annual fundraiser will be held this year at UDC’s Dennard Plaza. Featuring rides, games, book and bake sale and more. Vendors are also welcome. Find information on activities and becoming a vendor here: murchschool.org/hsa/fall-fair.
Sunday, October 16
Broad Branch Stream Community Day, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Celebrate the ongoing restoration of the green heart of Forest Hills, the Broad Branch and Linnean Stream park! Come for the invasive species removal, kick-off event and site tours, stay for the free pizza and drinks and shop for native plants. Details here.
Wednesday, October 19
UDC Community-Campus Task Force meeting, 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in Building 44 (which also houses the garage off Van Ness Street) Room A-03. Agenda items include: Murch Elementary, a student housing update, student enrollment and upcoming events. All are encouraged to attend for the latest information about university activities. Van Ness Walking Tour, 10 a.m. to noon. The Coalition for Smarter Growth is leading this tour of the Van Ness commercial area.

Van Ness Merchant Halloween Open House, 1 to 2 p.m.: Kids in costume trick-or-treat throughout the Van Ness Main Street area between Albemarle and Van Ness Streets. Gather at the UDC farmers market.

Book Talk, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Join Margery Elfin and Forest Hills Connection as she discusses her book on the Dreyfus Affair. Details here.

Hearst Elementary E-Cycle, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your unwanted electronics for recycling (and watch your hard drives get crushed on the spot). Swap outgrown bikes and books. Enjoy baked goods. Details at hearstes.org/ecycle_2016.
Community Tree Planting at Broad Branch Stream, 9 a.m. to noon. Join your neighbors and Casey Trees in planting 140 trees and shrubs at this daylighted stream. Details here.
