Tastes Of South Asia Open Along Connecticut Ave.

June 5, 2014

Any map of the world will tell you that Sri Lanka is south and east of India. But on Connecticut Avenue, their locations are reversed.

A new Sri Lankan restaurant called Banana Leaf is opening later this month at the former location of Clover Market at 5014 Connecticut.

And recently, Laliguras, a restaurant specializing in Northern Indian and Nepali dishes, opened at 4221-B Connecticut.

Banana Leaf (not to be confused with the pan-Asian Banana Leaves restaurant in Dupont Circle) has an older sibling in New York City, and the sign over the door and a menu posted in the window indicate it will be similar.

We spoke to Banana Leaf’s proprietors as they supervised a painter working on the facade Tuesday. They hope to open their new restaurant around the middle of this month.

As of July 18, there is a red “Stop Work” order posted on the front window of Banana Leaf’s location. Something about erecting an un-permitted sign. The order is dated July 8. Appears to be no activity in the building — in conformity with the order.
