Postponed: Hattie Sewell Short Film Premiere @ Peirce Mill
September 10 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The National Park Service is postponing this event indefinitely due to Covid-19.
Hattie Sewell was an African American woman who ran the teahouse at Peirce Mill exactly 100 years ago. But a prominent neighbor, E.S. Newman, complained that Peirce Mill had become “a rendezvous for colored people, soon developing into a nuisance.” Her contract was terminated in October 1921.
A 30-minute documentary about Sewell will premiere at Peirce Mill in Rock Creek Park on Friday, September 10, from 5pm – 9pm. Sunday September 12 is the rain date.
