Business in Brief: A Van Ness celebration “treasure” map, a restaurant homecoming, and who’s the Chevy Chase cheeseburger champ?

September 9, 2024

Van Ness Main Street, partners, and sponsors are throwing a big, 12-hour neighborhood party on Saturday, September 14th. The events list on the “Celebrate Van Ness Main Street” Eventbrite page has been expanding for weeks, and now you can see it mapped out below.

Consider it a treasure map, if the treasures pop up every hour, on practically every corner. And enjoy!

Also, Van Ness Main Street is still seeking volunteers for everything from the all-ages Forest Hills Park Cleanup, to the artisans market + Bread Furst barbecue pop-up at 4340 and 4400 Connecticut, to the movie night at the UDC Amphitheater.

Forest Hills Connection is an editorially independent program of Van Ness Main Street.

If you read all of the above: You likely spotted a couple of references to Il Supremo. That’s a new restaurant coming to 4400 Connecticut Avenue, which was previously home to Flavor Garden and two Italian eateries named Tesoro. We’re told the owner of Il Supremo, David Lobo, was the chef at the original Tesoro, which opened in 2000 and was sold in 2019 to Lobo and two partners, who opened Tesoro Trattoria only a few weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic erupted. Lobo eventually left the partnership to open Il Supremo Italian in Mount Pleasant. The Van Ness restaurant will be Il Supremo II.

Infinity Martial Arts II is now open: The Chevy Chase martial arts school opened its second location at 4340 Connecticut Avenue soon after its owner got the keys from UDC in August. This young boy, according to Infinity’s Instagram account, was the Van Ness location’s first student:

Longevity at Calvert Woodley: After Ed Sands, the wine and spirits store’s cofounder, died in April, we noted the remarkable tenure of many staffers. Calvert Woodley recognizes and honors that too, in a series of recent X posts.

Meet Bruce, who has been a part of CW since 2003. You’ll find him in the spirits section, ready to help you find the perfect drink for any occasion. 🥃 pic.twitter.com/tZrUg7eIj7

Meet Tammy.

If you’re a regular at CW, you’ve undoubtedly encountered Tammy at the register! With us since 2002, Tammy has been brightening everyone’s day with her witty banter and exceptional customer service. 🛒 pic.twitter.com/oVVZ1IrXPs

Meet Yared, who has been a part of the CW team since 1992! Yared’s knowledge of all things CW is unmatched. We can always count on him for his warm smile and positive attitude. 🍷 pic.twitter.com/ZfDIVs4RvW

Meet Kweku. Kweku has been at CW since 1983, only one year after we opened our doors for the first time ever! 🚪 With over four decades of experience, he is an invaluable member of our team. pic.twitter.com/QkAl1v3ZWf

Another side of the retail life: The longevity of Calvert Woodley employees is especially noteworthy in an industry not always known for valuing its workers. So an upcoming spoken-word event caught our eye. The show, called “Clean Up on Aisle 4! (Service workers tell all),” is on Thursday, September 19th at the Captain Cookie location in Cleveland Park.

A “Most Anticipated” Rosedale update: Eater, in its “Most Anticipated Fall Restaurant Openings to Track Around D.C.” reports the Ashok Bajaj restaurant is to open at 4465 Connecticut in October. We did ask Eater to correct some misplaced wording in the original article: “Cleveland Park’s historic Forest Hills neighborhood.” We suspect “Cleveland Park’s historic” was actually meant to describe the Rosedale Farmhouse, which the piece also mentions, is historic, and is in Cleveland Park. Eater’s “corrected” version removes the reference to historic Forest Hills… and places 4465 Connecticut in Cleveland Park. We tried.

A friendly and delicious competition in Chevy Chase: Which Chevy Chase restaurant serves the best burger? Wednesday, September 18th is National Cheeseburger Day, and Chevy Chase Main Street is organizing a $30 walking tour to Macon, Little Beast, The Avenue, and Parthenon. Participants will be served cheeseburger sliders, and will be asked to vote on their favorite. Dine-in customers from September 16 to 20 can also vote. The winner will be crowned during Chevy Chase DC Day festivities on September 21st.

Art All Night is still a two-night affair: Cleveland Park Main Street, on Friday, September 27th, is going for a circus sideshow vibe. The Tenleytown Main Street event, on Saturday, September 28th, will showcase artists, musicians and more at 15 venues.
