Nov. 6 election update: The Post’s Ward 3 picks vs. reality, and history in the making

November 13, 2018 by FHC 1 Comment

The DC Board of Elections will soon certify the results of the November 6th general election. Using the unofficial vote tally from dcboe.org, here are a few takeaways.

The Washington Post’s Ward 3 endorsements were a poor predictor

The Post did not endorse any of the DC Council incumbents on the Ward 3 ballot, choosing Dionne Reeder over Anita Bonds and Elissa Silverman for the at-large seats, and Ward 3 Council challenger Petar Dimchev over three-term Council member Mary Cheh (the Post incorrectly said Cheh had served two terms).

The Ward 3 results:

For the two At-Large Council seats

  • Top vote – Elissa Silverman with 35.66% or 16,444 of the votes (Citywide, Silverman came in second after Anita Bonds with 26.61%)
  • Second – Anita Bonds with 35.06% or 16,165 of the votes (Citywide, Bonds came in first with 44.35%)
  • Third – Dionne Reeder with 13.14% or 6,059 of the votes (Citywide, Reeded came in third with 14.44%)

For Ward 3 Council member

  • Mary Cheh won 73.8% or 22,042 of the votes
  • Petar Dimtchev won 25.52% or 7,624 of the votes

The Post also chose the challenger over the incumbent for Ward 3 State Board of Education. Here, too, the incumbent prevailed:

  • Ruth Wattenberg won 68.7% with 18,113 votes
  • Dora Currea won 30.05% vote with 7,918 votes

Is the Washington Post out of touch with its Ward 3 readers? We would like to know what you think.

ANC 3F made DC history

Monika Nemeth

The winner of the contested 3F06 race, with 400 votes, is Monika Nemeth. Nemeth is the first openly transgender person to be elected to a DC office. Washingtonian spoke to her on election night.

We’re also keeping an eye on the ANC 3F04 results. There was no candidate on the ballot for this single-member district. However, write-in candidates received 124 votes. Did someone prevail? We’ll find out soon enough. The DC Board of Elections usually gives write-in candidates a week beyond Election Day to file a notarized statement of their intentions.

Here are the unofficial results for ANC 3F:

ANC 3F01
David Dickinson (incumbent) won 95.42% or 625 votes

ANC 3F02
Carolinn Kuebler won 79.02% or 610 votes
Dave Donaldson won 20.21% or 156 votes

ANC 3F03
Naomi Rutenberg (incumbent) won 96.93% or 727 votes

ANC 3F04
No candidate filed but there were 124 write-ins (results not known at this time)

ANC 3F05
Andrea Molod (incumbent) won 97.72% or 599 votes

ANC 3F06
Monika Nemeth won 56.18% or 400 votes
William Sittig (incumbent) won 41.85% or 298 votes

ANC 3F07
Pat Jakopchek (incumbent) won 96.47% or 737 votes

Unlike The Washington Post, all my picks won. I confess that I only voted for one at-large councilmember, Elissa, because I wanted my vote for her to count even more than if I had voted for two.
