ANC 3F: Jair Lynch contract on Days Inn expired

The Days Inn at 4400 Connecticut Avenue is still on the market. According to ANC 3F, Jair Lynch Real Estate’s contract on the property has expired, and the site is being marketed to new developers. The commissioners had been preparing a resolution in support of the hotel’s redevelopment, and they will proceed with a vote at their meeting on Tuesday, December 13th.

More specifically, the resolution of support is for a mixed-use redo of the property, including market rate and affordable housing “to create opportunities for new residents to live in Van Ness and continue the revitalization of our commercial corridor.”

Another resolution coming up for a vote concerns night lighting at the UDC tennis courts to allow for expanded playing hours, as well as electronic keypad entry and video surveillance for security.

The third resolution on the agenda (below) would urge the Office of Inspector General to audit, inspect and investigate two other DC agencies that oversaw the renovation of Hearst Park and construction of the swimming pool. One reason: groundwater issues, flagged by a geologist before excavation, which “caused nearly a year of delays unrelated to the pandemic and presumably wasted substantial amounts of taxpayer funds for the additional work it took to attempt to remedy it, with the problem still persisting today.”

      What good are lights on UDC Tennis courts if they are not open.

        Correct. I would use the UDC Courts regularly if UDC was more accommodating. As of now, they have to open up the courts for you and only give you 1 hour. They promptly boot you off the court when your hour is up. Not to mention that their reservation system is clunky and takes a day. They could be making money on the courts if they managed it correctly. Instead, the courts beckon but deny play.

      At their prices no one buys gas anyway. Mary Cheh has kept the site from more useful development with her “can’t close gas station law”

    Who will pay the additional electricity bill for UDC lighting the court at night? Why not recommend that UDC update its street pole banners and turn on the water fountain on the plaza? Also, why is no one here advocating for the Days Inn to go to UDC for housing their students? Right…because y’all don’t really care about UDC.

      You can search this website. When I searched this website for “UDC” I found ten blogposts about UDC (not counting references to the UDC farmers’ market or the UDC tennis courts) going back to October 2021.

      ANC3F also posted this draft resolution concerning the lights on the UDC tennis courts which presumes that the resolution will be revised and voted on at the upcoming December 13, 2022 meeting of ANC3F:

      It seems possible to request that ANC3F add language concerning who will pay for the electricity for tennis court lights. The fee set by UDC for neighborhood residents to gain access to the tennis courts seems fairly expensive to me ($200?), so maybe the membership fee already includes some reimbursement for electricity.

    I really agree with this post. I read these posts from the UDC “community,” and I often wonder if they know how underfunded UDC is. I wonder if they know that UDC has been struggling for years to find housing for its students. Now, this Days Inn Jair Lynch building is happening, and NO ONE is advocating for that building to go to UDC. In contrast, everyone is advocating for free space and all-night tennis lights from UDC. It’s weird how this community treats UDC.

    We already have plenty of housing up and down Connecticut Avenue and side streets. But the Days Inn is already developed as a hotel. Our neighborhood should have a nice hotel in its midst. It’s so convenient for visiting family and friends for one thing. I would hope that a hotel corporation would take over the Days Inn and renovate and upgrade the existing hotel rooms, lobby and other areas. Not thinking of a five star, but a neighborhood hotel like a Courtyard by Marriott or other moderately priced brands. With its easy access to the Metro, this hotel would also attract tourists and not be a money loser for whomever takes it over.
