Definitely not dead: A Popville reader noted the newest sign at the incoming Van Ness MOM’s Organic Market, and wrote, “Maybe it’s not a dead project after all?” To which we say, there’s no “maybe” about it. Work continues daily at 4250 Connecticut Avenue. And Van Ness Main Street executive director Gloria Garcia told ANC 3F’s October 17th meeting that she’s been working with the market on permit issues, and that MOM’s might be at the ANC’s November meeting with an update.
Coffee klatsch: A bigger maybe is Compass Coffee at the former Burger King up the street. Garcia said Compass is still interested, but the landlord won’t budge on rent though the building, built in 1980, needs extensive work.
“The rent is definitely too high. It’s just over $220,000 for the year, and that’s way too high for a coffee business,” Garcia said. On top of that, “the building has to be completely gutted,” and needs a new HVAC system and new roof. “It’s been let go for years.”
Thanksgiving help in the kitchen: Local businesses are offering to help out with the side dishes, dessert, and even the entire meal. At Muchas Gracias, if you order by Monday, November 20th, you can pick up a Oaxacan-inspired meal for two or four on Wednesday, November 22nd. You can also add tamales to the order, or purchase them separately.
Rosemary Bistro Cafe is offering Thanksgiving takeout for one, two, four or eight, plus sides that can be added to the order, or purchased separately. These also must be picked up on the 22nd, the day before Thanksgiving.
Bread Furst’s “Everything But the Bird” dinner feeds four people and leaves leftovers for late and next-day snacking. Customers can also order breads and pies a la carte. Peruse the menu and call 202-765-1200 to order.
I’m Eddie Cano is serving up Thanksgiving sides as well. Order by November 19th (under “EDDIE EVENTS”.)
Sfoglina Pasta House’s Thanksgiving plans include a “Dinner at Home” for November 22nd pickup. And, the restaurant is open on Thanksgiving Day for those who prefer dinner out.
And Call Your Mother is taking orders for Thanksgiving sides and desserts including everything bagel stuffing and pumpkin cheesecake. The ordering deadline is Friday, November 17th.
P&P events go on hiatus: Says Politics and Prose: “Calling all bookworms! November is your last chance to view world-class book events at P&P in 2023. We’ll pause events in December for our busiest shopping season of the year – so make sure you catch these fabulous authors and their books [in real life] while you can.”
A collaboration with friends: Honeys and Friends, the ice cream and sweets shop in the former Sugar Fox space, is also one-stop shop for some foods and merchandise from its sister restaurants on the block. It’s currently selling jarred salsas from Muchas Gracias, and for the past month, Honeys has been running a Comet pop-up promotion featuring pan pizzas. These are baked in Honeys’ ovens but are not last-minute “What’s for dinner?” items. Order the pizzas for pickup or delivery at least a day ahead of time.
Pasta lessons: If you checked out the I’m Eddie Cano Thanksgiving ordering link above, you saw the pasta-making classes from chef Francesco Pescatore. Again, look under “EDDIE EVENTS.”

We walk by what will soon be “Mom’s” almost daily and this morning, refrigeration units seemed to be headed into the building. Can’t wait for their opening date to be announced.

Honestly everything between the Days Inn and the condo/apartment building on the corner is a waste of valuable real estate that would be better utilized in providing much needed metro accessible housing with street level retail. The faster it’s all demolished and redeveloped the better, including the Days Inn.
