Calvert-Woodley Wins Wine Retail Honors

February 4, 2013

by Marlene Berlin

market_watch_retailer_of_the_year_coverCalvert-Woodley Fine Wines & Spirits is full of surprises, even if you’re just popping in to say hello.

Recently, I accompanied Mary Beth Ray, one of 3F’s new ANC commissioners, into Calvert-Woodley. Mary Beth wanted to meet Ed Sands, the owner of this family-run business in Forest Hills. This was the end of a walk we took with folks from DC’s Office or Planning and DDOT’s Urban Forestry division to talk about how the community can work with our government in building a more vibrant commercial area.

As Mary Beth introduced herself and explained a bit about what we were up to, I spied a plaque, propped up against a wall and half hidden by a pile of papers. Being the nosy buddy that I am, I asked Ed what this was for, and he told me that Market Watch, a magazine for wine and spirits had given him the Retailer of the Year Award in September.

Well, I say better late than never in letting our neighbors in on this. Congratulations to Ed Sands and to Calvert-Woodley!
