No one was hurt – physically – by the gunman at Comet Ping Pong Sunday afternoon.
I want to congratulate the police on a very effective show of force, sealing the area, & an arrest apparently without injuries. https://t.co/rookW7DzxU

The emotional toll is harder to measure, but it’s severe. As a balm, we thought we’d share some of outpouring of support online for Comet, Terasol, Little Red Fox and all the other businesses on the 5000 block of Connecticut Avenue.
Everybody who lives in DC should eat a meal at Comet Ping Pong this week. This kind of thing just can't win. https://t.co/96DOv0cWko

Incident @cometpingpong doesn't just affect one business. @PoliticsProse, @littleredfoxdc, @jakes_dc, Terasol on closed block. Support them.

Comet is an amazing place, and the owners, patrons and neighborhood did nothing to deserve this. https://t.co/M16AYEjnMw

Needless to say, we agree.

This outrageous incident of hate and serious danger is what happens when people vote for hate and guns.
We will never allow hate to win.

I was in Comet when it happened. It was surreal and scary. I’ve been angered by the attacks the restaurant has suffered in social media and disappointed that those platforms have done little to stop them. This is my neighborhood, my favorite pizza restaurant. I’m looking forward to going back and finishing the pizza I ordered today. I hope the Comet staff and owners knows that we in the neighborhood stand with them.

I hope this starts a national conversation about how to spot fake news and its impact on public safety and national security. And the ongoing difficulty for the average citizen to weed out the noise from the truth. But when your future national security advisor is retweeting the fake stories…just no words.

If you’re referring to Michael Flynn, the Washington Post has already explained that his tweets were NOT about Comet Ping Pong – which means that you have promulgated fake news! See how easy it is to do that?

Of course, as the article points out, Michael Flynn Jr. confuses the issue by leaping to his father’s defense and himselfpromoting the Pizzagate lies.. Methinks he doth protest too much.

Which demonstrates that trying to weed out the fake from the true is extremely hard. The answer is never censorship, it’s more speech. Asking social media or even the mainstream media to stop publishing “fake news” is asking them to do the impossible. The MPD initially stated that the Comet Ping Pong suspect’s actions were NOT connected to the pizzagate rumors, then it reversed itself after further interrogating the suspect. Did the Washington Post or Twitter publish “fake news” by reporting the MPD’s first press release? Of course not.

Here’s a fact, though: The man who will advise our president-elect on national security has trouble separating fact from fiction, and does not carefully consider the evidence before making his pronouncements. And that is troubling.
