Music and more: Van Ness Main Street launches aLIVE@VN series on March 15

March 5, 2019 by FHC 1 Comment

It started as “Jazz@VN,” a monthly music series shining the spotlight on local talent and the Van Ness businesses hosting the event. Now, Van Ness Main Street is branching out with a new events series called “aLIVE@VN.”

The first aLIVE@VN event will be Friday, March 15th. Head to Tesoro (4400 Connecticut) between 6 and 7:30 p.m. for a pre-St. Patrick’s Day celebration with drink specials, prizes and live music by After the Flood.

After the Flood has also performed at the past two Van Ness Main Street “Barks & Brews” events.

Pat Davies chairs the Van Ness Main Street Events Committee. She answered our questions about aLIVE@VN:

Does this mean no more Jazz@VN? Or will it be in conjunction?

The idea of aLive@VN was to expand the types of events we offer within the program. It will certainly include jazz events, but will also embrace other kinds of music, food events at local restaurants and other venues, lectures and other “salon”-type events, and exhibitions and presentations by local artists.

Is it a once-monthly event or more fluid?

We are aiming for once monthly but in practice it will probably be more fluid, as we will also continue to organize other events such as the fundraiser in June, the “Pups on the Patio” series in August, “Barks & Brews” in September or October, the holiday pop-ups in December, etc.

What kinds of events are planned?

As I said, we plan to arrange a broad range of events, but our initial planning is revolving around the following (note that some of them are tentative at this stage, but are indicative of the types of event we are aiming to include in aLive@VN):

  • A launch event at Tesoro on Friday, March 15, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day with live music
  • A tour of the UDC green roof
  • A Nepalese cooking demonstration at Laliguras, to coincide with the Embassy tours on May 5
  • A demonstration and talk about flower arranging or something similar
  • A lecture on the UDC Jazz Archives, followed by live jazz and dinner in a local restaurant
  • A lecture by the Washingtoniana Collection on DC History
  • Exhibits and talks by local artists
  •
What is the benefit to businesses that host aLIVE@VN?

By hosting these events, our local businesses will be showcased to potential new clients, many of whom may not have visited the business before, and might be from outside Van Ness and not know what we have to offer, and what Van Ness Main Street is working towards for the future. Once they find out, we hope they will visit again, or even move here!

Is the Events Committee seeking volunteers?

Yes, we are seeking volunteers to help with the events. We are keeping a database of volunteers that we can call on to assist at individual events. Anyone who is interested should send an email with their name, address, and phone number to our executive director, Theresa Cameron, at tcameron@vannessmainstreet.org.

Forest Hills Connection is produced by volunteers, and supported by you. We appreciate your support – financial and otherwise. Here’s how to donate.

What is being done about the increased volume of the burger King speaker in the drive in window, I can hear the orders being taken a 11p. The volume has increase dramatically over the past few weeks. I hear the orders even with the windows closed at night.
