Forest Hills neighbors make the news, by boat and by bus:
“Out Of Sight Dragons” is their name. “We Have Vision” is their motto. They are DC’s own dragon boat club for the blind and visually-impaired.
Their coach, Forest Hills neighbor Winifred “Winkie” Day, is one of the team members featured in the Washington Post’s recent article about preparations for the Dragon Boat Regatta last Saturday at National Harbor. The Out Of Sight Dragons were one of two teams of visually-impaired racers competing that day.
Suspended from school in 1965 for wearing a black armband in protest of the Vietnam War, Mary Beth’s case made it all the way to the Supreme Court – and she won.
She now gives talks at schools about how children can stand up for their own rights. You can read more of Mary Beth’s story here.
