All five of the men and women running to be DC’s first elected attorney general will be in Forest Hills tomorrow night for a candidates’ forum. The evening begins with a 7 p.m. meet-and-greet at Forest Hills of DC (was the Methodist Home). The forum begins at 7:30.
The three candidates for mayor will be featured at another forum at the same time, but we know a great deal already about where they stand. Are you as informed about the Office of the Attorney General, and the candidates for that office?
Here’s a preview of what you’ll hear tomorrow night from the forum moderator, Walter Smith, the executive director of DC Appleseed.
Come Hear the D.C. Attorney General Candidates
I hope you’ll join me Thursday evening for a D.C. Attorney General candidate forum that I will be moderating, hosted by the Forest Hills and Chevy Chase Citizens’ Associations. It will be a chance to learn more about what the job of Attorney General entails, and how the five candidates might handle the job.
My hope for the forum is to ask the candidates to talk specifically about how they would address certain high-profile cases and issues you’ve probably already heard about–such as the lawsuit by the Council against the Mayor over local budget autonomy, the suit against the Council for postponing the Attorney General election, the suit against the city seeking the right to carry concealed weapons, and the suit by the charter schools against the city seeking greater funding.
If there’s time, I’d also like to ask the candidates their views about recent legislation that transferred authority over agency counsel from the Attorney General to the Mayor, and also their ideas about improving child support in the city, one of the most important functions of the Office of the Attorney General.
Although that’s a lot to try to cover in an hour, I think the conversation will let us hear how the candidates think about some of the key substantive issues one of them will be taking on next January.
The forum will be Thursday, October 9 at 7:30 pm at Forest Hills of DC, 4901 Connecticut Avenue NW. Doors will open at 6:30, followed by a meet-and-greet at 7:00. I would like to hear (a) What is the Attorney General’s job under current law (as recently narrowed, whether we like it or not); (b) what experience and skills does each candidate feel he or she now has to perform that job; and (c) how does she or he propose to compensate for any deficits?
