The excellent DC history blog, Ghosts of DC, takes its readers back 99 years to the 1914 July 4th celebration in Rock Creek Park.
[box]There were grand festivities across the city, including a community picnic in Rock Creek Park and an afternoon concert at the National Zoo by the U.S. Marine Band. Around noon, there was to be held a concert near Peirce Mill with a national fun salute and “patriotic exercises.”[/box]
This photo, taken in Rock Creek on this day, likely recorded one of the events described here. (photo courtesy of the Library of Congress)
Study this photo and make note of these people’s patriotism – and their fortitude. Imagine having to brave DC’s July heat in suits, ties and long dresses!
