Photos: Broad Branch and Linnean Streams on ice… and an unexpected touch of spring

Cold and clear weather provides a great opportunity to see our local streams dressed up in their icy finery. On my walk Wednesday to Broad Branch Market to get my Black Rooster Rye bread, I decided to take a look at the Broad Branch and Linnean Streams.

Because of all the rain we’ve had, the pools at Broad Branch Stream are full.

The pool next to Broad Branch Road, though iced over looks like it could easily flood over onto the roadway. This may need some attention by the DC Department of Energy and the Environment, which managed the daylighting of this stream.

It was the ice formations that caught my eye, subtle but stunning nonetheless.

At Linnean Stream, either the rain created new pools, or I was looking at large iced-over puddles. One was so large it took me a moment to figure out how to get around it.

The pools look to be in good order.

Continuing on my walk, I was welcomed by an unexpected touch of spring – daffodils making a preliminary appearance.
